Kicking things off for me this week will be the 1.30 at Leicester, which is a Class 6 apprentice handicap over a mile and two furlongs. This looks like another good opportunity for BRADBURY to open his account for Ed Bethell, with Jack Callan doing the steering. He’s still a maiden after seven starts; however, he’s arguably thrown away his last two races, finishing second in both starts, having not looked genuine in the closing stages. He’s been fitted with an eyesheild on this occasion, and if that helps him maintain focus, he should prove tough to beat. His main danger is possibly Captain Cairney, who’s having his first run since being gelded; he was a winner on the all-weather in the autumn.
I’m staying at Leicester for my second selection of the afternoon, and the 2.00, which is a Class 4 maiden over seven furlongs. It could pay to side with the newcomer, SEE AMNA here for Eve Johnson Houghton, who’s the mount of Charlie Bishop. She’s a nicely bred type, and represents a yard that are doing well with their two-year-olds so far this term, and the horses with experience in this field set far from a daunting standard, having not shown a great deal. It would be no surprise if this Wooded filly made a winning debut. Kach Above is the clear form pick on the little we have to go off here, and has to be considered for the main danger for the Loughnane team.
I’m siding with another one for the Johnson Houghton yard in the 2.30 at Leicester, as I think that JAZZY BAY can take this Class 4 maiden, over seven furlongs. This is quite a tricky affair on paper; however, this two-year-old has shown promise in his two starts to date, running well over course and distance on his most recent outing when finishing third and a length and a quarter behind the winner. He should naturally continue to improve with racing, and should be there or thereabouts at the business end of things here under Charlie Bishop. Celtic Charioteer is well-bred and should take a big step forward following his debut run, and there should also be more to come from Mottaret, who makes up the shortlist.
My best of the day on Monday comes within the 3.15 at Carlisle, and this is a Class 4 fillies’ maiden over a mile. I’m strong on the chances of PEARL here for the team of Ralph Beckett and Hector Crouch. She’s a nicely bred filly who made a very pleasing debut at York last month when finishing third, and just a length behind the promising Portcullis. That’s the best piece of form on offer in this particular contest, and she should naturally take a big step forward coming into her second start. She’s a four-year-old, so she has to give weight away, but she’s likely the most promising here. Marhayb is the likely main danger, as she’s also expected to improve following her debut effort when finishing fifth on the all-weather at Newcastle.
