SATURDAY SELECTIONS
1.15 Haydock (Superior Mile Stakes): ICE MAX – 4/1 (Each-Way)
My first selection of the day this Saturday comes within the 1.15 at Haydock, and this is the Group 3 Superior Mile Stakes, that’s contested over a mile. Ice Max appeals to me here for the team of Karl Burke and Clifford Lee. He was a Group 2 winner last year, and whilst his form has been slightly in and out this term, he’s not been disgracing himself as of late, and was an eyecatcher behind Jonquil in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood last month, when he was denied a clear run. This is an ease in grade for him, and I think that he should be making his presence felt.

2.25 Haydock: GRAN DESCANS – 5/1 (Each-Way) (4 places – bet365, Sky Bet)
Next up for me will be the 2.25, and this is a Class 2 handicap, which is contested over a distance of a mile and six furlongs. I like the Harry Charlton trained Gran Descans here, who’s the mount of William Buick. He’s an unexposed and progressive-looking three-year-old, and a winner of back-to-back novice events earlier in the summer. Most recently, he finished second on his handicap debut at Newcastle last month, behind Circus Of Rome, whom he’ll reoppose here. I think he could turn that form around, as he’s better off at the weights with that rival now, and given how he kept on last time, this further step up in trip could unlock further improvement.

3.35 Haydock (Sprint Cup Stakes): KIND OF BLUE – 13/2 (Each-Way) (Sky Bet, Paddy Power)
The feature race of the afternoon comes up at 3.35 and this is the Group 1 Sprint Cup Stakes, that is run over six furlongs. I’ve come down on Kind Of Blue here for James Fanshawe and Daniel Muscutt. He was a head second in this race last year, before going on to win the Group 1 Champion Sprint at Ascot. Things didn’t go to plan on his first two starts of this campaign; however, he bounced back to form last time out at the Curragh when finishing third of twelve in the Group 3 Phoenix Stakes, just a length and three-quarters behind the winner. He could well be finding his form late on in the season, and he looks a solid each-way play.
