Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Preview

1.50: Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap: Welcome aboard to this Monday Preview where the focus is on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood. We kick things off with the 1.50 which is the fiercely competitive Chesterfield Cup handicap over a mile and two furlongs. I’ll chance a couple at big prices here, the first being Killybegs Warrior for Charlie Johnston and Kevin Stott. He’s not been in great form at all lately, however, he’s dropped down to a mark that is two pounds lower than his last winning one and the yard often targets this meeting for winners. I’ll also chance Stay Well for Hughie Morrison and Hollie Doyle, he’s been in a lot better form, albeit on the all-weather, and was only a length and three-quarters behind favourite Enjhaar last time out when second at Chelmsford. He could well outrun his price. Killybegs Warrior – 16/1 (Each-Way) & Stay Well – 16/1 (Each-Way)
2.25: HKJC World Pool Vintage Stakes: We move up in grade at 2.25 with the Group 2 Vintage Stakes over seven furlongs. I’m with Aomori City here for the boys in blue of Charlie Appleby and William Buick. He won on debut at Nottingham before finishing third of six behind Whistlejacket in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket last month at the July meeting. He should relish this step up in trip and, likely, he’s far from the finished article. He comes into this race with a fine chance for his powerhouse connections, should he get some luck in the run, of course. Aomori City – 9/2 (Win) (NAP)
3.00: HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes: It’s more Group 2 action at 3.00 as we now have the Lennox Stakes taking centre-stage over seven furlongs. I’ve sided with Tiber Flow here who’s currently a 6/1 chance in the betting for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. He’s an admirable performer who often runs a good race at this sort of level, and comes into the race in fine form having won the Group 3 John Of Gaunt Stakes when he was last seen in June. He may well get a race run to suit him here and there’s every chance he’ll be bang there once more. Tiber Flow – 6/1 (Each-Way)
3.35: Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes: The feature race of the day comes up at 3.35 and that’s the Group 1 Goodwood Cup over two miles. It’s almost impossible to oppose Kyprios here for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore who currently heads the betting at a skinny price. There’s no Trawlerman in the line-up here and it’s hard to see any of these really stepping up and giving him something to think about. It would be a major shock should he not get the job done here and claim a second win in the race, his first coming back in the 2022 running. Kyprios – 8/15 (Win)
4.10: Coral Racing Club Handicap: It’s back into handicap company at 4.15 which is another fiercely competitive affair, this time over a distance of five furlongs. I’m chancing Jm Jungle here who’s seemingly the second string here for John & Sean Quinn. He won at the meeting last year and posted a much more encouraging effort last time out when fourth of sixteen in a competitive handicap at the Curragh. He’s very capable on his day and I think he can run a big race off his current mark. Jm Jungle – 9/1 (Each-Way)
4.45: British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes: The 4.45 is maiden company over six furlongs and I think that this can go to I Maximus who represents the combination of Richard Hughes and Ryan Moore. He was clearly fancied to go well on his racecourse debut at Newbury earlier this month when sent off the 5/4 favourite, and despite finishing third on that occasion he shaped with plenty of promise. He should come on significantly for that run and if getting a bit of luck around this unrelenting track, he can go close. I Maximus – 5/1 (Win) (Each-Way)
5.20: Ridgeview Fillies’ Handicap: My final selection of the afternoon comes in the 5.20 which is a Class 3 fillies’ handicap over a mile. I’m strong on Strutting here for John & Thady Gosden who’s the mount of Kieran Shoemark. She ran a huge race in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot last month when just half of a length behind Soprano in second. She was also fourth in Listed company here back in June and she sets the standard for me here. This represents an ease in grade for her and if she turns up in the same form as last time she could prove very tough to beat. Strutting – 5/1 (Each-Way)
