Feature Meeting: Southwell
2.05: Download The Raceday Ready App Handicap Chase: My first selection of the week comes in the 2.05 at Southwell which is a handicap chase over two miles. I’m taking a chance on Zara’s Universe here for Andrew Cook and William Maggs who takes off seven pounds. She’s not been seen to best effect so far this season, however, she wasn’t too far away from the winner last time out at Catterick when third in what was her best run of the season. She also looks on a handy mark here taking her rider’s claim into consideration. Zara’s Universe – 5/1 (Win)
2.35: Download The Racing App Now Handicap Chase: Next up is the 2.35 which is another handicap chase this time over a distance of three miles and half of a furlong. I’m with Coconut Splash here for the combination of Evan Williams and Harry Cobden. He’s not won for a very long time, with his last victory coming in a novice hurdle back in 2020. However, he has run some big races in competitive affairs since then, and despite falling away recently, his last run at Ffos Las when third of seven showed some signs of encouragement. He’s on a tumbling mark and should be competitive in a race like this. Coconut Splash – 4/1 (Win)
3.40: Try The Racing App This Afternoon Maiden Hurdle: My third selection of the afternoon comes in the 3.40 which is a maiden hurdle that’s contested over two miles and four and a half furlongs. This looks like a nice opportunity for Long Draw for the team of Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen. He made a very encouraging start to life under rules when finishing third of fourteen in a novice hurdle at Taunton back in December. If building on that good run here he’s got to be considered a big player in what looks like an ordinary contest. Long Draw – 7/4 (Win)
4.40: Join Southwell Golf Club Novices’ Handicap Hurdle: The finale is the 4.40 which is a novice handicap hurdle that’s ridden over two miles. I’m with We Got Your Back here who represents Laura Morgan and John Kington. He comes into the race having ran a fine race on handicap debut last time out when finishing half a length second to Call Me Jack at this track a few weeks ago. He’ll contest this off the same mark and if progressing from that run, which is likely, should go very close. We Got Your Back – 3/1 (Win) (NAP)
