July Cup Day Preview
Author: Jordan Yates (@jordan_yates)
Feature Meetings: Newbury, Market Rasen
1.50 Newbury: Get Best Odds Guaranteed At BetVictor Steventon Stakes: We kick things off on this week’s Saturday Preview on Super Sprint Day with the 1.50 at Newbury which is the Listed Steventon Stakes over a mile and two furlongs. This looks to be all about Alyanaabi for Owen Burrows and Jim Crowley. He was far from disgraced when finishing fifth in both the Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes and this ease in grade should see him assert his dominance, getting a considerable amount of weight from nearest market rival Al Aasy. Alyanaabi – 8/11 (Win) (NAP)
2.05 Market Rasen: Unibet Moneyback As Cash Races Handicap Hurdle: It’s over to Market Rasen for my second selection of the afternoon and this is a Class 3 handicap hurdle over two miles and four and a half furlongs. I like Pyffo here for Jonjo O’Neil who’s the mount of Jonjo Jr. He made all on his most recent outing at Uttoxeter and drops back down in trip here, which I think could see him make the most of his stamina from the front. Pyffo – 9/2 (Win)
2.40 Market Rasen: Unibet Daily Industry Best Prices Summer Handicap Hurdle: We stay at Market Rasen for my third pick of the day and this is another handicap hurdle this time Class 2 action over two miles and half of a furlong. I’m with Kilhavah here for Adrian Keatley and Henry Brooke. He’s a smart dual-purpose horse who I actually put up for a handicap on the flat at York back in May where he finished second. He’s not been quite as good on the level on his last two outings, however, he has a liking for Market Rase having won here last year, and can make his presence felt once again in this sphere. Kilhavah – 9/1 (Each-Way)
3.00 Newbury: Fidelity Energy Hackwood Stakes: It’s back to Newbury now for the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes which is ridden over six furlongs. I like Lake Forest in this who represents the team of William Haggas and Tom Marquand. He was a Group 2 winner last season when winning the Gimcrack Stakes at York and returned to the track this term with a very encouraging second behind Inisherin in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. He got hampered that day at the start, which adds more positives to the run and if he progresses further from that effort, he could have a very serious say in this. Lake Forest – 5/1 (Win)
3.15 Market Rasen: Unibet Summer Plate Handicap Chase: The big race of the afternoon from Market Rasen comes up at 3.15 and this is the Summer Plate which is a Premier Handicap over two miles and five and a half furlongs. I’m strong on the chances of Boombawn here for the Dan & Harry Skelton. He looks to have been laid out for another profitable summer campaign and as we saw last winter and spring these connections know just what’s needed to big one of these big handicaps. If getting a clear round he’s got every chance of posting a bold bid. Boombawn – 11/2 (Each-Way) (NB)
3.35 Newbury: Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes: Signing me off for the afternoon will be the feature race of the day from Newbury which is the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint over five furlongs. I’m taking a chance on one at a big price here and that’s Miss Collada for Richard Hannon and Tom Marquand who’s currently a 14/1 chance in the betting. She’s looked like a useful prospect in her last two starts, winning a maiden and novice event in comfortable enough style at Wolverhampton and Salisbury. The yard has had a fine record in this race in recent years and I believe they have another in this filly who can go well. Miss Collada – 14/1 (Each-Way)
