Featured Meetings: Newcastle, Newmarket
1.35 Newcastle: Jenningsbet 200 Shops Nationwide Handicap: We kick things off at 1.35 at Newcastle with a Class 2 handicap over six furlongs. I’m taking a chance on King’s Lynn here for Andrew Balding and David Probert. He’s been in solid form lately, with his most recent effort coming when finishing fourth of fifteen in a competitive handicap at Hamilton. He was also a neck second at Goodwood on seasonal reappearance as well as third here back in May, his mark has dropped a further two pounds since those runs and if turning up in the same form he’s got every chance. King’s Lynn – 8/1 (Each-Way)
2.04 Newcastle: Jenningsbet Nun Street Newcastle Open Now Chipchase Stakes: Next up at Newcastle is Group 3 action with the Chipchase Stakes over six furlongs. I’m with Montassib here for the team of William Haggas and Cieren Fallon. He’s a likable sort who won a Listed event at Doncaster on his seasonal reappearance, before finishing sixth of fourteen in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes last time out. He’s won at this track before and I think his strong finishing style could see him play a major role here. Montassib – 6/1 (Each-Way)
2.35 Newcastle: Jenningsbet Festival Northumberland Vase Handicap: My third selection of the afternoon comes in the 2.35 at Newcastle which is the Northumberland Vase over two miles and half of a furlong. I like Faylaq here for Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan who’s currently a 15/2 chance in the betting. He’s not won for a while now, however, ran a very encouraging race last time out at Hamilton when third of twelve in a competitive handicap and will contest this off the same mark, which is six pounds lower than the mark he contested this race off last year when finishing third. Faylaq – 15/2 (Each-Way) (NAP)
2.50 Newmarket: JCB Fred Archer Stakes: It’s over to Newmarket now for their 2.50 which is the Listed Fred Archer Stakes over a mile and four furlongs. King Of Conquest will be a warm order here, however, I’ve tried to take him on, and I’ve done that with Crystal Delight who’s currently 4/1 for Harry Eustace and Jim Crowley. He’s got a bit to find on ratings here, however, he’s an improving sort and comes into the race on the back of a couple of very impressive victories in competitive handicaps at Epsom and York. If he continues his current rate of progression I think he’s got every chance of bridging the gap on ratings. Crystal Delight – 4/1 (Win)
3.10 Newcastle: Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Handicap: The feature race of the day comes up at 3.10 and this is the Northumberland Plate which is a Heritage Handicap over two miles and half of a furlong. I’ve sided with the Irish raider here in Yashin for Jessica Harrington and Scott McCullagh who takes off three pounds. He drops back into handicap company here having plied his trade within pattern company recently, finishing third behind Kypiros the last twice in Listed and Group 3 affairs. Last term he was only three lengths behind Absurde in the Ebor when finishing seventh and he’ll contest this off the same mark. He’s the second highest rated in the race and his stable has been in fine form so far this term, if getting some luck he can go well. Yashin – 9/1 (Each-Way)
3.25 Newmarket: Plantation Stud Criterion Stakes: My final selection of the afternoon comes in the 3.25 at Newmarket which is the Group 3 Criterion Stakes over seven furlongs. I’m taking a chance on Nostrum bouncing back here for Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Kingscote. He’s failed to beat a rival on his last two outings, which is obviously far from ideal, however, he’s been far too keen recently and he’s now been gelded. His best performances have come at Newmarket and he clearly has bundles of ability as he proved when winning the Tattersalls Stakes and Sir Henry Cecil Stakes. If the gelding operation has a positive effect he could prove to be a massive player. Nostrum – 4/1 (Win) (NB)
