A big welcome to my Glorious Goodwood preview for 2019. In this year’s edition I’ll be taking a look at the feature race of each day by compiling a runner by runner guide, a race verdict and a win and each way selection where applicable. So as ever, sit back and enjoy!

Nassau Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) (1m 2f)

Runner Guide.

HERMOSA

Form: 22-112 – Draw: 5 – Odds: 15/8
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore
“Completed the UK/Irish Guineas double at the beginning of the season and looked a potential superstar. Has since had her colours lowered when a hot favourite at Royal Ascot finishing second in the Coronation Stakes. Still the one they all have to beat here.”

Runner Jacket

MEHDAAYIH

Form: 1-1171 – Draw: 3 – Odds: 7/2
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Frankie Dettori
“Looked top class when winning the Cheshire Oaks back in May however things didn’t go to plan at Epsom the time after when meeting a lot of trouble in running. Back on track with French Group 2 success the last day and looks a big player once again here with Frankie on board.”

Runner Jacket

MAQSAD

Form: 23-118 – Draw: 2 – Odds: 13/2
Trainer: William Haggas – Jockey: Jim Crowley
“Hasn’t been seen since finishing down the field in the Oaks at Epsom, looked very smart before that with back to back wins at Newmarket. Should appreciate it back down at this distance and is a major player here.”

Runner Jacket

CHANNEL

Form: 2111 – Draw: 8 – Odds: 7/1
Trainer: F-H Graffard – Jockey: Pierre-Charles Boudot
“Very interesting French raider who has won her last three starts including the Group 1 Prix de Diane on her latest outing. That’s very strong form and she could well take all the beating here under Boudot.”

Runner Jacket

RAWDAA

Form: 21-322 – Draw: 9 – Odds: 15/2
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Daniel Tudhope
“Consistent sort who always runs her race at a decent level, ran Lah Ti Dar close at York on her penultimate outing and has since gone close in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot. Likely to be a popular each way play with punters .”

Runner Jacket

SUN MAIDEN

Form: 36-311 – Draw: 1 – Odds: 14/1
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: James Doyle
“Won her last two outings and has some solid form in top company, this requires a whole lot more though but she’s not ruled out and has every chance of getting into the placings.”

Runner Jacket

JUST WONDERFUL

Form: 4-6782 – Draw: 7 – Odds: 18/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Wayne Lordan
“Showed smart form on occasions, most notably second placed effort in US Group 1 last time out. Not totally ruled out here but looks up against it in this company.”

Runner Jacket

DEIDRE

Form: 2-6466 – Draw: 4 – Odds: 33/1
Trainer: Mitsuru Hashida – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
“Japanese raider who was outclassed at Royal Ascot last time, this is slightly easier but still looks to have a lot on her plate.”

Runner Jacket

NYALETI

Form: 248724 – Draw: 6 – Odds: 33/1
Trainer: Mark Johnston – Jockey: Joe Fanning
“German 1000 Guineas winner last year, ran some decent races of late but this is much more testing and hard to envisage her playing a part.”

Race Verdict:

If turning up in the same form as either of her Guineas wins Hermosa will be tough to beat here for Ballydoyle. She’ll likely just sit off the pace and then aim to press on in the straight and use both her ability to stay and her general class to see her through. I’ve sided with the Gosden filly though in MEHDAAYIH to get the better of the Guineas heroine as I’m not sure we’ve seen anywhere near the best of her yet. I was at Chester when she won the Cheshire Oaks and it was a very taking performance, things didn’t go to plan for her at Epsom but she was still traveling well when meeting trouble. Her run in France last time was much more like herself and a repeat of that level of performance would see her bang there here. I think Frankie may well track Ryan on the favourite and try to pick her off in the straight. My each-way pick in this race would have to be the French raider CHANNEL. A lot like Mehdaayih I don’t think we quite know the limit to her ability and if she turns up in the same form as her Prix de Diane win then she is very much a force to be reckoned with under Boudot. I think she could run a huge race here.

WIN: MEHDAAYIH (3/1)

EACH WAY: CHANNEL (7/1)
