A big welcome to my Glorious Goodwood preview for 2019. In this year’s edition I’ll be taking a look at the feature race of each day by compiling a runner by runner guide, a race verdict and a win and each way selection where applicable. So as ever, sit back and enjoy!

Sussex Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) (1m)

Runner Guide.

TOO DARN HOT

Form: 1-2231 – Draw: 3 – Odds: 11/10
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Frankie Dettori
“Outstanding two year old who won the Dewhurst Stakes. Gloss slightly came off this season when beaten in his first three starts, he was still placed in two Group 1’s however. Bounced back to form when winning Group 1 in France the last day and will likely be tough to beat again. Suspicion he wants a drop in trip to be fully effective though.”

Runner Jacket

CIRCUS MAXIMUS

Form: 34-161 – Draw: 6 – Odds: 7/2
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore
“Winner of the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot when beating Too Darn Hot, also won the Dee Stakes at Chester earlier this season. Dropped back down to a mile here but is still a very solid contender.”

Runner Jacket

PHOENIX OF SPAIN

Form: 122-16 – Draw: 4 – Odds: 5/1
Trainer: Charles Hills – Jockey: Jamie Spencer
“Won the Irish 2000 Guineas in very impressive style earlier this season but was unable to follow it up when behind the two market principals at Royal Ascot. Would be a clear player if rediscovering his Guineas form.”

Runner Jacket

LORD GLITTERS

Form: 66-301 – Draw: 7 – Odds: 7/1
Trainer: David O’Meara – Jockey: Daniel Tudhope
“Very likeable six year old who reached new heights when winning the Group 1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot last month. He’s put in big performances all around the world and despite not being the classiest horse in the line up it’s likely he’ll give his running once more.”

Runner Jacket

ZABEEL PRINCE

Form: 2-1178 – Draw: 8 – Odds: 16/1
Trainer: Roger Varian – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
“Six year old who started the season in fine form winning the Earl Of Sefton then following up with Group 1 success in France. Form has tailed off since albeit in tough company, will need to rediscover old form if he is to play a part in this.”

Runner Jacket

ACCIDENTAL AGENT

Form: 05-3R4 – Draw: 1 – Odds: 33/1
Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton – Jockey: Charles Bishop
“Winner of the Queen Anne last year but hasn’t been able to replicate that form since, refused to race in that contest this time around and was last seen when running a respectable enough race at Ascot . Looks really up against it in this company.”

Runner Jacket

HAPPY POWER

Form: 1-1317 – Draw: 2 – Odds: 33/1
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Sivestre De Sousa
“Smart three year old who won a Listed race at York on penultimate start. Was outclassed in higher company on the latest outing and once again looks up against it here.”

Runner Jacket

I CAN FLY

Form: 106233 – Draw: 5 – Odds: 33/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Donnacha O’Brien
“Smart sort on her day and has put in some big efforts in big races. Hard to envisage her getting near the market principals here but it wouldn’t be a surprise if she was to outrun her price.”

Race Verdict:

This is a fascinating renewal of the Sussex Stakes and a very intriguing rematch between the market principals. We all know that Circus Maximus can stay it’s likely that  Ryan will ride him to utilise that as he did when winning the St James’s Palace the last day. Phoenix Of Spain comes here with questions to answer, he may well try to go from the front again like he did when dominating in Ireland. I think the race will go to TOO DARN HOT though despite me still thinking he’ll be more effective over shorter trips. Frankie will have a better idea of how to combat these two rivals on this occasion and the class of John Gosden’s three year old may well see him through. From an each way perspective I think ZABEEL PRINCE could well run a big race, he was up against it the last twice in hot company and despite being amongst class horses once again he could well steal a place if running to the level of his early season form.

WIN: TOO DARN HOT (11/10)

EACH WAY: ZABEEL PRINCE (16/1)
