A big welcome to my Glorious Goodwood preview for 2019. In this year’s edition I’ll be taking a look at the feature race of each day by compiling a runner by runner guide, a race verdict and a win and each way selection where applicable. So as ever, sit back and enjoy!
Goodwood Cup (Class 1) (Group 1) (2m)
Runner Guide.
STRADIVARIUS
Form: 111-11 – Draw: 5 – Odds: 4/6
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Frankie Dettori
“The champion stayer who has looked better than ever this season when winning at York then following up by winning another Ascot Gold Cup. Won this race the last two years and will be tough to stop making it a third.”
CROSS COUNTER
Form: 121-14 – Draw: 3 – Odds: 3/1
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: James Doyle
“Melbourne Cup winner who went on to follow up with success in the Dubai Gold Cup. Fourth behind Stradivarius last time in the Ascot Gold Cup but was staying on at the end, could get closer.”
DEE EX BEE
Form: 43-112 – Draw: 6 – Odds: 5/1
Trainer: Mark Johnston – Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
“Revitalised as a stayer this term, won Sandown Group 3 before finishing second at Ascot behind Stradivarius. Hard to see him turning that form around with the favourite but it’s likely he’ll be in the placings once again.”
SOUTHERN FRANCE
Form: 7-3264 – Draw: 8 – Odds: 20/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore
“Four year old who looks Ballydoyle’s first string here. Been slightly underwhelming lately after a fine second to Stradivarius at York in May. Was last seen when fourth in the Curragh Cup when 15/8 favourite. Talented but will need to improve if he’s to feature.”
DASHING WILLOUGHBY
Form: 8-2314 – Draw: 7 – Odds: 25/1
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
“Queens Vase winner who has since gone on to finish fourth in the Princess of Wales’s stakes at Newmarket’s July meeting. Needs soft ground to show true form and looks up against it in this company.”
WELLS FARHH GO
Form: 6614-1 – Draw: 1 – Odds: 28/1
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: David Allan
“Lightly raced four year old who was last seen winning a Listed race at Newmarket last month. Smart on his day but will have to step up markedly on all known form if he is to play a meaningful part here.”
SOUTH PACIFIC
Form: 2-B121 – Draw: 9 – Odds: 33/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Wayne Lordan
“Won big field handicap at Royal Ascot and likely has more to offer. Hard to envisage him being be up for this kind of level though.”
HARPO MAX
Form: 8-0216 – Draw: 4 – Odds: 100/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
“Tipperary maiden winner who was sixth in the Queens Vase. Likely to be playing some form of pace making role here for top connections.”
Race Verdict:
Dee Ex Bee will likely try to set the pace again here and will try to steal the race from the front however it’s likely he could have competition for the lead though from either of the Ballydoyle outsiders. This could well set it up for a closer and the obvious horse that comes to mind is Cross Counter judging how he stayed on well in the Gold Cup at Ascot last time. It’s hard for me to see past STRADIVARIUS though as he always just finds a way to win which has seen him earn the title of the best stayer in the business. He’s won the last two renewals of this race and if mastering Cross Counter again I can see this being a third Goodwood Cup. From an each way point of view I think SOUTHERN FRANCE could well nab a place at a big price, if any of the big three aren’t on a going day he’s more than enough ability to take their place and at 20/1 he looks a fair each way alternative.
