Glorious Goodwood Selections (Day 5)

1.20: Coral Glorious Stakes

We get things underway on the concluding day of Glorious Goodwood with the 1.20, which is Group 3 action in the form of the Glorious Stakes. I think that this can go the way of Al Aasy again, who won the race last year for William Haggas and Jim Crowley. He added another Group 3 success to his CV on his first start of this campaign, when taking the Gordon Stakes at Sandown, and whilst he’s not been quite at the same level in his two starts since, he should bounce back to form in what doesn’t look like a strong renewal of this race.

AL AASY – 6/4 (Win) (NAP)

1.55: Coral Summer Handicap

Next up it’s the 1.55 and this is the Coral Summer Handicap, which is a Class 2 affair over a mile and six furlongs. I’m taking a chance on Subsequent here for Andrew Balding and David Probert. He was very progressive last year, winning four times, which included two handicap victories and a Listed success at Ascot on his final outing. He didn’t make any impression on his seasonal reapperance in Group 3 company at York; however, he wasn’t given a hard time and should be significantly fitter here. He should post a much more convincing effort second time out and back within handicap company.

SUBSEQUENT – 11/1 (Each-Way) (4 places – Most firms)

2.30: Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes

We move back up in grade at 2.30 with the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes for the fillies & mares over a mile and six furlongs. I’m fairly strong on the chances of Term Of Endearment here for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. She won this race last year, and whilst that was her last success, she’s run with credit in several of her outings since, among top-level company. She probably found two miles too far last time out when a couple of lengths behind Coltrane in the Coral Marathon at Sandown, and a drop back down to a mile and six furlongs here looks the right move. She’s versatile ground-wise, and there’s every chance she can retain her crown.

TERM OF ENDEARMENT – 10/3 (Win) (NB)

3.05: Coral Stewards’ Cup

The feature race of the afternoon comes up at 3.05 and it’s the fiercely competitive Stewards Cup, which is a Heritage Handicap over six furlongs. I’ve come down on two in this year’s renewal of the race, the first of which is Purosangue for Andrew Balding and William Buick. He was sent off as the favourite for this race last year and didn’t fire; however, he hasn’t been too far away in several competitive affairs since. He’s a Listed winner and has enough class to play a part off his current mark.

My second selection is Strike Red for the team of Billy Garritty and Richard Fahey. He’s been knocking on the door in big-field sprints for some time now, and ran well once again at York last week from an unfavourable draw. He’s clearly come out of that race well, as he’s turned out again quickly, and he can go well again in another big race here off just a pound higher than last week’s sixth-place effort, where he was just a length and a quarter behind the winner.

PUROSANGUE – 6/1 (Each-Way) (7 places – Sky Bet)

STRIKE RED – 14/1 (Each-Way) (7 places – Sky Bet)
