Hungerford Stakes Day
Feature Meetings: Newbury, Ripon
Author: Jordan Yates (@jordan_yates)
1.50 Newbury: BetVictor Geoffrey Freer Stakes: We get things underway on this week’s Saturday Preview with Group 3 action in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes over a mile and five and a half furlongs. I find it hard to get away from Al Aasy here who heads the betting for William Haggas and Jim Crowley. He looked impressive when winning at Goodwood last time and has a liking for this course, should he turn up in the same form as his most recent success he should be tough to beat. Al Aasy – 10/11 (Win) (NAP)
2.25 Newbury: Play The BetVictor Predictor Now Handicap: We move into handicap company at 2.25 with a Class 3 handicap over five furlongs. I’m taking a chance on Michaela’s Boy here for Robert Cowell and Tom Marquand. His recent form is far from great, however, he’s been given a break and has been gelded and received a wind operation in that time. He’s also now only a pound higher than his last winning mark and represents a yard that excels with their speedsters. Michaela’s Boy – 7/1 (Each-Way)
3.00 Newbury: TPT Fire Handicap: It’s more handicap action at 3.00 with Class 2 action over seven furlongs. I’m with Waleefy here who’s another one for William Haggas and Jim Crowley. He comes into the race in the best form having won two of his last three starts, with his most recent success coming at Doncaster earlier this month when he won in impressive style. He looks highly progressive and can have a big say in this. Waleefy – 9/2 (Win)
3.20 Ripon: William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap: It’s over to Ripon now for their feature race of the afternoon which is the Great St Wilfrid Handicap over six furlongs. I like the chances of Radio Goo Goo here for David Evans and Dylan Hogan. She’s a very likeable filly who’s no stranger to the winner’s enclosure and has added a further two victories to her tally this season. She’ll enjoy the trip and can make her presence felt from stall seven. Radio Goo Goo – 10/1 (Each-Way)
3.35 Newbury: BetVictor Hungerford Stakes: My final selection of the day comes back at Newbury and their feature which is the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over seven furlongs. I’m with Kikkuli here for Harry Charlton and Oisin Murphy. He was a neck behind Haatem in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and went off favourite in Group 1 company last time in France before finishing sixth of twelve. I’m not sure he appreciated the soft ground last time and a return to what should be a quicker surface here can see him to best effect, as he’s still highly progressive. Kikkuli – 11/4 (Win) (NB)
