Welcome aboard to this week’s Saturday Preview where I’ve got six selections to share with you all from Cheltenham on Trials Day. Make sure to gamble responsibly if you are having a bet.
12.05: JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle: We kick things off at 12.05 with the Grade 2 Triumph Trial, a juvenile hurdle over two miles and a furlong. I think that Burdett Road can win another one of these, he created a big impression when taking Grade 2 honours over course and distance at the November Meeting, and I think he’ll take a lot of beating again in this particular assignment. Burdett Road – 10/11F (Win)
12.40: Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase: Next up it’s the 12.40 which is a novice handicap chase over two miles and four and a half furlongs. I’m siding with Es Perfecto here for Alan King and Gavin Sheehan, who’s currently an 11/2 chance in the betting. I’ve tipped him on his last two runs, and he’s ran well on both occasions, in particular, most recently at Kempton on Boxing Day when staying on strongly at the end of the race. He’ll contest this off the same mark and can go well again. Es Perfecto – 11/2 (Each-Way)
1.15: Paddy Power Cheltenham Countdown Podcast Handicap Chase: We move onto the 1.15 now which is a handicap chase that’s also contested over two miles and four and a half furlongs. I’m with Victtorino here for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch. He arrives here in great form having won his last two starts, both coming in competitive handicaps at Ascot. He’s received a four-pound rise for his most recent success and that might not be enough to stop him. Victtorino – 5/1 (Win)
1.50: Paddy Power Cotswold Chase: We have the Grade 2 Cotswold Chase up at 1.50 which is ridden over three miles and one and a half furlongs. This can go to Stay Away Fay for the team of Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden. I’m a big fan of this horse and he’s taken to fences well having won both of his first two starts. with his most recent success coming in the Grade 2 Esher Chase at Sandown in November. He stays all day and has the course form too having won the Albert Bartlett at last year’s Festival. Stay Away Fay – 11/4F (Win)
3.00: Unibet Hurdle: My next punt comes in the 3.00 which is the Unibet Hurdle, formerly known as the International Hurdle. A Grade 2 affair that’s contested over two miles and a furlong. It’s hard to oppose Lossiemouth here who currently heads the betting for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend. She won the Triumph Hurdle at last year’s Festival before following up with more Grade 1 success at Punchestown, I think she’s head and shoulders above this lot, regardless of ratings, and it would be disappointing should she not win. Lossiemouth – 4/6F (Win)
3.35: McCoy Contractors Cleeve Hurdle: The 3.35 is where my sixth and final selection of the afternoon will run, and this is the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle over three miles. I’m taking a chance on Noble Yeats here for the team of Emmet Mullins and Harry Cobden. It’s likely the former Grand National winner wants further than this, however, I don’t think that this is a necessarily strong renewal of the race and he’ll likely come on a great deal from his Listowel second back in December. Noble Yeats – 4/1 (Win)
