Saturday 7th October

Welcome aboard to this week’s Saturday Preview where the feature race of the day is the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket, I’ll be sharing my verdict on that contest as well as four other races from both Newmarket and Ascot. As ever, if you are punting make sure to do it in a responsible manner.
2.05 Newmarket: Tattersalls October Auction Stakes: I’m kicking things off with the 2.05 at Newmarket which is a valuable auction event over six furlongs. I’m siding with Woodhay Wonder here for Tom Ward and PJ McDonald, who’s currently a 9/2 chance in the betting. She actually won another valuable auction race on her most recent outing, which also came at this track and she looks to still have considerable potential. If building on that effort here she’s got every chance of landing another big pot. Woodhay Wonder – 9/2 (Win)
2.25 Ascot Cumberland Lodge Stakes: Moving over to Ascot now for their 2:25 which is the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes that’s contested over a mile and four furlongs. I’m taking a chance on Al Qareem to upset the Shadwell pair at the top of the betting here, for Karl Burke and Clifford Lee. He bounced back to form at Chester last time when outbattling Bluestocking in listed company, and prior to that he had some very solid form to his name in Europe last season, winning a Group 3 in France and finishing a head second in the Bahrain Trophy last year on the July course here. He gets a bit of weight off the market principals and I think a big run could be on the cards. Al Qareem – 9/2 (Win)
2.40 Newmarket: British EBF 40th Anniversary Premier Fillies’ Handicap: Back to Newmarket now for the 2:40 which is a competitive fillies handicap over a mile and four furlongs. I’m going with Divina Grace here for the team of Rae Guest and Callum Shepherd, she comes into this race in fantastic form winning her last two outings with the most recent success coming over course and distance last week. She’s edging up the weights but could well have more to offer and should she turn up in the same form she’s got to be considered a very big player. Divina Grace – 9/1 (Each-Way)
3.15 Newmarket: Sun Chariot Stakes: The feature of the day comes up at 3.15 which is the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes over a mile on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket. I think that this year’s renewal of the race is all about Inspiral who currently heads the betting for the powerhouse team of the Gosden’s and Frankie Dettori. She returned to form on her most recent outing which came in the Group 1 Jaques le Marois at Deauville in France and she’s got the best form on offer in this. If she’s anywhere near her best she’ll prove very tough to beat. Inspiral – Evs (Win)
3.35 Ascot: Howden Challenge Cup: My fifth and final selection of the day comes from Ascot in the Howden Challenge Cup, which is a Heritage Handicap that’s ridden over a distance of seven furlongs. On a personal level, I’ve had a torrid time of things trying to find winners in these contests this season, however, I’m hoping Fresh can break that unwanted streak for me here. He’s not managed to get his head in front so far this season, however, he’s still posted some solid efforts, most notably on his latest two which came at York and the Curragh. He’s won over course and distance off higher marks in the past and I’m chancing him to go close again here. Fresh – 7/1 (Each-Way)
