Welcome aboard to my preview for the 2023 St Leger Festival that is set to take place at Doncaster over the next few days, running from Thursday to Saturday. I’ll be previewing all three days of the meeting, so, as ever, if you are having a punt, make sure to do so in a responsible manner.

1.50: Flying Scotsman Stakes: I’m kicking things off on Day 2 of the Leger Meeting with the 1:50 which is the Flying Scotsman Stakes and in this year’s race I’m siding with War Rooms who currently heads the betting for Owen Burrows and Richard Kingscote. He comes into the race having won his only start to date which came over course and distance back in July, winning impressively on that occasion by just shy of five lengths. That effort also came on soft going and he looked to be a seriously exciting prospect, if building on that run again here he’s got to be in with a massive chance. War Rooms – 11/4 (Win)

2.25: Flying Childers Stakes: Next up it’s the Flying Childers Stakes which is a Group 2 affair that’s ridden over a distance of five furlongs. I’ve tipped this horse up to no prevail a couple of times this season but I’m sticking with him once again here and that’s Kylian who’s the mount of Ryan Moore and represents the Karl Burke yard. I do actually think he’s had excuses on the last couple of occasions at both Goodwood and York, where he’s found trouble in running both times. I still think that there is a very good horse in there, which we’ve seen glimpses of this season, most notably when he bolted up in the Dragon Stakes at Sandown. If he gets a bit more luck in the run on this occasion I think he could go close under Moore. Kylian – 11/2 (Each-Way)

3.00: Doncaster Cup Stakes: My third and concluding pick of the afternoon on Day 2 comes in the Doncaster Cup at 3:35 which is a Group 2 affair over two miles and two furlongs. I think that this is all about Coltrane who currently heads the betting for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy, he’s one of the most likeable horses in training and bounced back to form last time out when winning the Lonsdale Cup at York last month. I think he’s much more reliable nowadays than his old rival Trueshan who he’ll reoppose once more here, and he looks clear on ratings from Sweet William, who could progress but would have to do so a great deal. If Andrew Balding’s six-year-old is anywhere near his best he should take all the beating in this. Coltrane – 11/8 (Win)
