Qatar Goodwood Festival Preview. (Saturday)

Saturday 5th August 2023

Welcome aboard to my previews for this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival which is set to take place from Tuesday all the way through to Saturday.

2.25: Coral Summer Handicap: We reach the concluding day of this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival and my first write-up on the final day comes at 2:25 with the Coral Summer Handicap. I’m taking a chance on Splendent in this particular affair which is set to be ridden over a distance of a mile and two furlongs. He represents the team of Paul & Oliver Cole and is set to be ridden by Ryan Moore here, when he was last seen he bolted up at Newbury by four lengths, beating the useful Obsidian Knight in the process and also has form on soft ground having won on it at Windsor back in May. He’s a decent price here at the 11/1 mark and is clearly still progressive. Splendent – 11/1 (Each-Way)

3.00 Lille Langtry Stakes: It’s Group 2 action at 3:00 as the Lille Langtry Stakes is set to take pace over a mile and six furlongs and I think that this year’s renewal of the race is all about Free Wind who currently heads the betting for John & Thady Gosden and is the mount of Frankie Dettori. She wasn’t seen to best effect last time in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot when finishing fifth of seven and three lengths behind Pyledriver, however, I can give forgive her one bad run as prior to that she looked highly progressive when winning three Group 2s on the spin. She’s considerably clear on ratings here too so probably wouldn’t need to be at her absolute best to take this. I think she’ll prove very tough to beat. Free Wind– 6/5 (Win) (NAP)

3.35: Stewards Cup: The feature race on Saturday is the most competitive contest of the week which is the Stewards Cup a Heritage Handicap over six furlong where twenty-eight runners are set to go to post. I’ve tried my hand with two fancies, the first of which is Apollo One who’s a 14/1 shot and the mount of Richard Kingscote. He’s placed three times this season all coming within competitive handicaps, the most recent effort coming in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot where he was fine second. He’s been nudged up three pounds but he’s still progressing and could go well from his high draw. My other fance is Juan Les Pins at 20/1 for Michael Appleby and Alistair Rawlinson, he was just behind my first pick in the Wokingham back in third and is only up two pounds for that run, prior to that he won well at Nottingham and if reproducing either effort here he could well go close if getting some luck in the run. Apollo One – 14/1 (Each-Way) & Juan Les Pins – 20/1 (Each-Way)
