Welcome aboard my preview for the July Festival that’s set to take place at Newmarket this week over the next three days, starting on Thursday and concluding on Saturday with July Cup Day. I’ll be previewing for the full meeting, so as ever, if you are having a punt make sure to do it in a responsible manner.
1.50 – BAHRAIN TROPHY
TOWER OF LONDON – 7/4
“Aidan O’Brien trained three-year-old who arrives here in fine form having won his last two outings, which include a listed success and a competitive handicap in the Ulster Derby on his most recent showing. I think that this is a horse who is still highly progressive and if continuing his current rate of improvement he could well prove tough to beat here.”
2.25 – JULY STAKES
MALC – 4/1
“This is as competitive as Group 2 contests come but I’ve come down on the Richard Fahey trained Malc who’s set to be ridden by Oisin Orr here. He won on racecourse debut at Carlisle in impressive style before running a mighty race in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot when finishing second, that’s the best form on offer in this and if progressing again from that effort he’s got to be considered a big player. ”
3.00 – BET365 HANDICAP
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS – 11/2
“He’s a horse that has been knocking on the door all season within competitive handicaps, finishing second on each of his last three outings with his most recent run coming when finishing second of twenty-one in a Heritage Handicap at York. He’s been nudged up four pounds for that effort but I don’t think that’s enough to stop him from running his race again, and with Ryan Moore on board here this could well be his day.”
4.10 – FILLIES MAIDEN
SACRED ANGEL – 4/1
“Dark Angel filly who represents the team of Charlie Johnston and William Buick here and she arrives here having posted a fine effort on her racecourse debut at Pontefract in June when finishing third of seven. It’s likely that she’ll build on that run here and if that’s the case she should be there or thereabouts at the business end of things.”
