A big welcome to my Glorious Goodwood preview for 2019. In this year’s edition I’ll be taking a look at the feature race of each day by compiling a runner by runner guide, a race verdict and a win and each way selection where applicable. So as ever, sit back and enjoy!
Lillie Langtry Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (1m 6f)
Runner Guide
DRAMATIC QUEEN
Form: 11-812- Draw: 7 – Odds: 7/2
Trainer: William Haggas – Jockey: James Doyle
“Won York Group 3 on penultimate start and was second behind Enbihaar the last day in a Group 2 at Haydock. Very solid form at this kind of level and will have no problem with the trip. Should be thereabouts once again.”
ENBIHAAR
Form: 14-121 – Draw: 4 – Odds: 7/2
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Jim Crowley
“Has won at Listed level and a Group 2 this season with the latter coming the last day at Haydock when getting the better of Dramatic Queen. Looks a typically progressive sort for a stable that does so well with types like her. Should be a key player here for top connections.”
MANUELA DE VEGA
Form: 11-245- Draw: 2 – Odds: 7/2
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Harry Bentley
“Possibly the classiest horse in the line-up and a very interesting contender to say the least. She’s been plying her trade in Group 1 company as of late with respectable efforts in both UK & Irish Oaks. Shouldn’t have any problem with the trip and could appreciate this slight ease in grade.”
SOUTH SEA PEARL
Form: 63141 – Draw: 3 – Odds: 7/2
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore
“Winner of a Listed race last time at Leopardstown and has come in for a lot of support in the market in the last day. Likely she has a lot more to offer for powerhouse stable and this track looks very much up her street. .”
PILASTER
Form: 38-343 – Draw: 5 – Odds: 8/1
Trainer: Roger Varian – Jockey: David Egan
“Winner of this race last year and a smart sort on her day, finding her day is the apparent issue though as her form has been very in and out of late to say the least. Certainly has the ability to play a part but needs to step up on current form.”
PEACH TREE
Form: 402016 – Draw: 1 – Odds: 16/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
“Won a Group 3 last month and certainly has ability however is often thrown in the deep end in top events. This won’t be much easier but if showing up in top form she’s not completely without a chance.”
FLOWERING PEACH
Form: 615614- Draw: 6 – Odds: 66/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Sean Levey
“Outsider of the field and is likely here on tactical duties for top connections, has won a maiden and a handicap this season but looks really up against it when it comes to being competitive in this line-up.”
Race Verdict:
This is possibly one of the most competitive renewals of this race with many of the field not being separated by much in the betting. South Sea Pearl is possibly the most interesting one in the line-up and has been the gamble of the race so far, it will be intriguing to see if the money continues for her throughout Saturday. I’ll jump straight in with who I’ve sided with though and that’s ENBIHAAR for John Gosden and Jim Crowley. She’s currently one win apiece with Dramatic Queen having got the better of that rival last time out and I think she can confirm the form again here. John Gosden has strength in depth with these types and targets each race specifically with each horse and I think this progressive four year old can once again put in a bold showing. Before signing off a mention has to be given to Manuela De Vega, a very classy sort who has the ability to blow these away if turning up in top form.
