My first selection of the day on Wednesday comes within the 2.42 at Ayr, and this is a Class 4 handicap over a mile and a furlong. I’m quite strong on the chances of PEARL EYE here for Jim Goldie, who’s set to be ridden by Lauren Young, who takes off a very handy five pounds. He’s now eleven pounds below his last winning mark, and posted a very encouraging effort here on his seasonal reappearance earlier this month, finishing three-quarters of a length behind the winner in third. That run came off the same mark as his current one, and he looks rock solid on the back of that.
It’s another well-handicapped rival I like in the 3.12, a Class 5 handicap over five furlongs, and this is MILITARY GIRL for Michael Dods and Connor Beasley. She also ran an encouraing race on her first run of the campaign, finishing third of six at Pontefract last month, and just a length behind the eventual winner Betweenthesticks. She’s been dropped a further pound for her troubles there, resulting in her now being four pounds below her last winning mark. She should also naturally take a step forward following that first run, which makes her of interest.
Next up is the 3.42, and we move slightly up in grade with a Class 4 handicap that’s contested over a mile. The unexposed Return To Unit will be popular at the top of the betting here, however, I’ve come down on HALE END, who’s another one for Michael Dods and Connor Beasley. He comes into this contest in good form, having won his penultimate start at Ayr, before running a cracking race at Thirsk on Saturday when finishing half a length second of twelve. He remains on the same mark for this assignment, which is two pounds lower than a course and distance victory. If he’s in the same form, he should be bang on the premises again.
My fourth and final selection of the afternoon comes within the 4.12, which is Class 5 handicap action over seven furlongs. This is my best bet of the day, and it comes in the form of KELPIE GREY for Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan. He’s a course and distance winner, with that success coming off a three-pound higher mark than his current one. He likely needed the run at Musselburgh last month when finishing sixth of ten and four and a quarter of a length behind Abduction, and he should be a lot more tuned up for this affair. It would be no surprise to see him get a lot closer at the business end of things, and I suspect a big run is on the cards from the six-year-old.
