Uttoxeter Feature (David MacDonald Interview)
Uttoxeter is my local racecourse and I thought i’d take up an opportunity to document on what a great track it’s become in recent times. The course has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years and is now a very well looked after set up with some great facilities.
There is a whole host of top drawer race days to go along too now none more so than the likes of the Midlands Grand National and the Summer Cup which attracts bumper crowds of 10,000 and above.
Not only is there top drawer racing on offer at Uttoxeter but a whole host of great entertainment with performances from world renowned artists in the summer as well as Beer and Food festivals.
One man who has been a catalyst in turning Uttoxeter into the success story that it has become is the Racecourse Executive Director David MacDonald and I caught up with him for a quickfire interview about some of his favourite moments whilst being at the course as well as what we can look forward too in the upcoming months at the track…
1.) What’s your personal favourite race at Uttoxeter?
“It has to be The Midlands Grand National. It’s a race with a great history and it is a real test.”
2.) What was your favourite performance of any horse during your time at Uttoxeter?
“Synchronised winning the MGN in 2010. The race was actually slower than the Grand National won by Don’t Push It a few weeks later. What a fighter Synchronised was.”
3.) Who’s your favourite horse of all time?
“Amberleigh House was owned by my boss at the time of his Grand National Victory John Halewood. I had placed bets on the horse all year. I also had a few happy friends that year!”
4.) Who’s your favourite rider of all time?
” Most jockeys have a closer relationship with the Clerks than the racecourse directors so you really do take note of those that make an effort and Andrew Thornton is the nicest guy you could meet. Interestingly on a raceday Tony McCoy was so focused he barely looked you in the eye BUT when he was a guest as an after dinner speaker he was funny and charming.”
5.) What can people look forward too at Uttoxeter this summer?
“On the racing front The Staffordshire Plate, The Clarke Chase and the Summer Cup. Entertainment wise I can’t wait to see The Lightning Seeds and the coolest Spice Girl Melanie C who is DJ on Ladies Night.”
I’d like to thank David for his time for speaking with me and wish him and the team all the best for the future over at Uttoxeter.
