 Musselburgh – (3.20) (Handicap) (Class 2) (7f 33y)

It’s Musselburgh where my first Preview of the week comes from and in particular the 3.20 which is a Class 2 Handicap that’s ridden over a distance of seven furlongs. It’s a very competitive affair that’s headed by last year’s winner Muntadab (4/1) for Roger Fell who got back into the winners enclosure on his penultimate start and looks to make his presence felt again here with seven pound claimer Oakley Brown on board. Just following him in the market comes Starlight Romance (5/1) for Richard Fahey who returned to form the last day with a solid second placed effort at Haydock, a consistent performer who often gives a decent account of himself and is the mount of Paul Hanagan here. The horse that beat the Fahey charge in that Haydock run re opposes here and that’s Cold Stare (11/2) representing David O’Meara. He’s since gone to a run a very creditable fifth in the Ayr Silver Cup and that form obviously makes him a key player again here now back at this trip. He’s the mount of three pound claimer Conor McGovern. Haydah (11/2) for Rebecca Bastiman returned from a near three year lay off earlier in the year to win but has questionable form since and will need to bounce back here, he’s the mount of David Allan. Jedd O’Keeffe sends an interesting contender here in the form of Air Raid (6/1), down the field last time on the All Weather but does had two victories on turf to his name albeit on soft ground. He’s been gelded and had a wind op since the last run and is still very much unexposed, one to watch for sure with Jack Garritty on board.

Love Dreams (7/1) for Mark Johnston takes his place here on somewhat of a revival mission following several down the field efforts in what were tough handicaps. He did make all earlier in the season at Goodwood and has a draw here where he could well attempt to do that again. Joe Fanning takes the ride. David O’Meara is also represented here by Three Saints Bay (12/1) and Rousayan (14/1), the former is no stranger to the winners enclosure but will need to put a poor run on the All Weather last time behind him if he is to feature here, whereas the latter has failed to win in 35 attempts away from his beloved Beverley. Al Erayg (16/1) for Tim Easterby and Oriental Lilly (20/1) of Jim Goldie make up the field.

Pretty much any of these could win if turning up on a going day however the one i’ve taken a chance on bouncing back here is LOVE DREAMS for Mark Johnston. He’s back down to a winning mark and this is a slightly easier assignment than what he’s been used to of late. He’s also drawn in a handy position to attack from the front and could be hard to peg back just as he was when he last won at Goodwood. Starlight Romance for me is a live danger and the most interesting contender in the field certainly looks to be the unexposed Air Raid for Jedd O’Keeffe.

Quick Picks

(Progressed with each run despite still looking green last time, debut run over C&D, no surprise if came on again here for top yard.)

Gowran Park

MUNTAHEZ (15/2) (E/W)

(Seemed to enjoy the soft ground last time and will need to enjoy it again here as going looks to be heavy, progressed each time since debut and could handle this better than most.)
