Doncaster Grimthorpe Chase Preview (3.35)
The Grimthorpe Chase takes centre stage this weekend at Doncaster a Class 2 Handicap Chase that’s contested over a distance of three miles and two furlongs with a prize fund of just shy of £35,000. The meeting was abandoned last year due to the adverse weather conditions with the last renewal coming back in 2017 and that particular affair was won by Brian Ellison’s Definitely Red, who has since gone on to be successful at a higher level including running a decent enough race in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
This year’s renewal is headed by the Kim Bailey trained Rocky’s Treasure who’s already won a Grade 2 around here this season back in December. I actually saw him in action the last day at Warwick when he was well fancied however it wasn’t to be on that occasion and he was decisively beaten by the smart OK Corral. Before that he looked a horse destined to ply his trade within Graded company on a frequent basis and he’ll be looking to return to the form of that December win here. You can find him trading at a general 9/4 and is the mount of David Bass. Next up in the betting is Alan King’s Dingo Dollar, he was last seen when finishing sixth within Listed company here in January however before that he ran a cracker to finish third in the Ladbrokes Trophy. He’s the worthy second favourite here on all known form and can be found trading around 4/1 with Wayne Hutchinson on board.
Nicky Richards sends Looking Well to take his place here and he was last seen only a few weeks ago when winning here within a Class 2 Handicap Chase, it’s likely he’ll be a player once again here which reflects in his price of 5/1. Aidan Coleman looks to take the ride. Another horse that’s in good form is the Phillip Hobbs trained Beau Du Brizais he comes here off the back two consecutive victories at Ludlow as well as being in generally consistent form all this season, he’ll be looking to relish the slight step up in grade here and you can find him at around the 13/2 mark in the betting.
A very likeable sort in the line up is Fergal O’Brien’s Barney Dwan, consistent in the majority of his races and has put in big performances at Cheltenham Festivals. Despite the small field he’ll probably be a popular each way bet with many punters at around 7/1 here under Sean Bowen. Chidswell and Brian Boranha conclude the line up who both come here in decent form but both require a bit of a step up if they are to play a part, this duo are currently 10/1 and 12/1 respectively.
This is a competitive renewal of the Grimthorpe Chase of which all of the line up have a decent chance, Dingo Dollar should be there or thereabouts on the back of his run in the Ladbrokes Trophy however he’ll need to bounce back from a pretty underwhelming effort here last time. The one i’ve sided with will also need to bounce back from a below par effort and that’s ROCKY’S TREASURE. He’s got to give weight away to the whole field here but if he bounces back to the form of his Grade 2 win here in December he’s got to be a player, Kim Bailey targeted this race before with The Last Samurai. Keep an eye on Barney Dwan as it’s likely he’ll outrun his odds.
