A headline which will probably make a few chuckle but the infamous one and only Firmament takes the to track once again this time in the 7.00 at Chelmsford on the All Weather which is a Class 3 contest over a mile. He was last seen when finishing sixth at Lingfield last month which continued his two year long losing streak. His mark is forever getting lower as he’s set to run off 96 here which is finally the same as his last winning one back in August of 2016. His best run of this year in my opinion came when he finished third in a decent Class 2 contest at York at the Ebor Meeting and a return to that form obviously gives him a chance. Martin Harley once again takes the ride on this rogue contender and he’s a best priced 13/2 chance.
This particular contest is a competitive one as you may expect and the market leaders currently both find themselves trading at around the 3/1 mark. These come in the form of Greatest Journey and Breden. Michael Appleby’s charge Greatest Journey was last seen when winning at Wolverhampton and as a consequence carries a six pound penalty for that success here. It might not be enough to stop him though under the talented Alistair Rawlinson. Breden also won on his last outing and he did it in very taking style beating a decent enough type by a couple lengths when travelling all over the field turning in. If turning up in the same kind of form here he’s a big danger to the field and rightfully takes his place at the top end of the market under Robert Winston. One of the more interesting runners in the field is possibly the William Haggas trained Restive Spirit a dual winner over this trip and is wearing cheekpieces for the first time. He’s a general 9/2 chance with Tom Marquand on board.
“Of course im going to back Firmament here, I probably could’ve purchased a major share in him the amount of times ive backed him over the last two years throughout this long arduous losing streak. There are many things that could be classed as positives and negatives for him going into this contest, if on top form he walks all over this lot, but finding which Firmament is going to turn up is often more difficult than finding the winner itself. The sensible section of my brain pulls me to Restive Spirit, who could well have more to offer for top connections at a distance he clearly enjoys. Come on Firmament!”
