The Clonmel Oil Chase is always an intriguing affair that generally see’s a combination of upcoming younger chasers taking on their older more seasoned counterparts and that’s no different this year with the promising six year old Kemboy heading affairs for Willie Mullins. He developed into a smart chaser last year winning his last two starts and has consequently found himself in betting markets such as the King George. It’s likely there’s a lot more to come from him and those markets could be shaken up slightly should he put on a dominant display here.

Last year’s winner Alpha Des Obeaux heads a three strong attack from Gordon Elliott, recently transferred to Gordon from Mouse Morris he started his season off with fifth placed effort last month at Limerick and that looked a nice enough stepping stone for a bid to retain his crown here. Jack Kennedy will take the ride. A Toi Phil is the other Gigginstown representative for Gordon, a solid yard stick who was below par on his reappearance run the last day. He’ll need to put that behind him here however he may well be a lot better for the run that day, Davy Russell partners him. The Elliott three is concluded by Doctor Phoenix, a horse who improved markedly last season whilst under Gordon’s care, he did however finish the season on a slightly sour note and will be looking to bounce back to form here under Keith Donoghue. It’s another solid yardstick that makes up the field and that comes in the form of Colin Kidd’s Rashaan. An admirable servant to this yard and smart dual purpose horse. He could well outrun his odds here under Sean Flanagan.

(3.35) T.A. MORRIS MEMORIAL IRISH EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND MARES CHASE. (Listed) (2m 4f)

Last season’s JLT winner Shattered Love made her seasonal reappearance with a solid second behind Snow Falcon in Grade 2 company the other weekend and the Gordon Elliot charge is fancied to come on for that and take this Listed Mares Chase.

Her main threats look to come in the form of last year’s winner and stablemate Dinaria Des Obeaux who also comes here off the back of a second placed effort on seasonal repperance. The Willie Mullins trained Camelia De Cotte who’s had three goes at chases already winning two of them, and Denis Hogan’s Youcantcallherthat who I think might have a chance here at a decent price.
