Sunday Preview. Irish Champions Weekend. (Day 2) (16/09/2018)

Sunday Preview

Irish St Leger

The Irish St Leger is one of many Group One contests that take place on the second day of Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh with an eye catching €285,000 going to the winner of this particular affair. Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore won the English St Leger yesterday with Kew Gardens and they have the market leader here and that’s none other than Flag Of Honour. He’s a horse that’s been gradually coming into his own as a top stayer and has been showing this on his last two outings over course and distance here winning the trial for this race and the Curragh Cup. It seems to of been planned out perfectly for a tilt at this and he’s a serious contender at the top of the betting at 2/1.

The Irish Derby winner Latrobe is next up in the betting at around the 9/4 mark who was last seen when finishing down the field in the Juddmonte at York. That was an extremely tough race though and going back to his two runs before that around here he’s got to enter equations. Donnacha O’Brien takes the ride. The British raider here comes in the form of Weekender for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori who sits at around the 3/1 mark in the betting. A horse that put in a mighty performance the last day to finish second in the Ebor under a mighty weight. He’s progressed steadily this year and he may well take another step up again here. The Ballydoyle second string looks to come in the form of Idaho a horse that’s been around for what seems like a very long time and has been dining at the top table throughout much of his career. He’s back down in trip today after finishing behind Stradivarius a few times and if on a going day could well get involved. Seamie Heffernan takes the ride and he’s a general 11/2 chance in the betting.

The field is made up by Twilight Payment for Kevin Manning and Jim Bolger and Cypress Creek for Aidan O’Brien and Emmet McNamara. These trade at around 16/1 and 66/1 respectively.

A tough race to call as Flag Of Honour is going to take some beating but I’m going to take a chance on stablemate IDAHO. He’s played his part in many a top contest whereas some of these haven’t and ill chance him being on a going day to give this market leader something to think about.
