Doncaster St Leger Festival 2018 Preview. (Day 1)

St Leger Festival 2018

The St Leger Festival kicks off this week up at one of my favourite tracks in Doncaster and is always a fine week of racing culminating with the St Leger itself on the Saturday. The action starts on Wednesday however and that’s where my Preview will begin with the Day 1 feature that is the Scarborough Stakes.

Scarborough Stakes (Listed) (5f)

The Scarborough Stakes is a Listed contest that’s ridden over a distance of five furlongs and this year’s renewal is headed by Global Applause for a trainer who’s excelled with sprinters over the years and that’s of course none other than Robert Cowell. Global Applause was last seen when winning a decent handicap at Sandown and once again has the services of Gerald Mosse to rely on. He’s a general 11/4 chance in the betting.

Next up in the market is a horse im a huge fan of and that’s of course El Astronaute for John Quinn. He was last seen when winning at the Ebor Festival last month and is often seen running big races at big summer festivals. He’s a general 7/2 chance in the betting and is reunited here with Jason Hart. Alongside him in the betting you can find Final Venture for Paul Midgley who was second behind El Astronaute at York. He’s since gone on to finish a slightly disappointing fifth in the Beverley Bullet and will be looking to make a return to the York form here.

Last year’s winner Encore D’or (10/1) takes his place here but will need to improve his current form, he does have the services of Ryan Moore however. Under The Covers (6/1) comes here following a solid fourth placed effort in Listed company at Tipperary whereas Sunsprite (10/1) for Richard Hughes and Marine James (8/1) the Iain Jardine representative both arrive here in great form.

There’s no chance I’ll be abandoning EL ASTRONAUTE and he’ll once again be my pick here. Win or lose he’ll be bang there in my Flat Horses Of The Year blog at the end of the season and he’s got every chance of once again being bang there in this.
