Glorious Goodwood 2018 Preview. (Day 2)

Qatar Goodwood Festival 2018

Day 2

Wednesday 1st August 2018

The Sussex Stakes takes centre stage on Day 2 of Glorious Goodwood a Group 1 affair ridden over a distance of a mile and it’s a contest that has an illustrious history of top class winners.

The unbeaten Without Parole heads affairs this year for John Gosden and he comes here on the back of an impressive display when winning the Group 1 St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He’s sure to put up another bold showing here under Andrea Atzeni and is trading at a general 13/8.

Next up in the market is Expert Eye for Sir Michael Stoute who got his career back on track with a devastating win in the Jersey at Royal Ascot the last day. That was his most impressive display since winning in dominant style in Group 2 company here last year. It’s interesting that they’ve decided to go back up in trip with him and if on a going day he’s certainly a live player. James Doyle takes the ride and he’s trading around the 11/4 mark.

Beat The Bank has won six of his ten outings and got back to winning ways the last day at Ascot. He won over course and distance at this meeting last year in Group 3 company and is a very smart performer on his day. He’s around the 13/2 mark and is the mount of Jim Crowley. Lightning Spear has been beaten in the last two renewals of this but comes here in good form with two placed efforts in top contests, Oisin Murphy takes the ride for David Simcock. The Ballydoyle representative comes in comes in the form of Gustav Klimt who was second to Without Parole at Ascot. He looks slightly exposed at this level but is a solid performer on his day and you’d be foolish to discount him. He’s the mount of Ryan Moore and can be found generally around the 7/1 mark.

The rest of the field is made up by French raider Orbaan for Andre Fabre, and the David O’Meara pair of So Beloved and Lord Glitters.

Whilst I think that Expert Eye turn of foot can be used to devastating effect I can’t get away from WITHOUT PAROLE. I think there’s still a lot more to come from him and he can continue his impressive season for John Gosden here.
