Saturday Preview. (Irish Derby & Northumberland Plate) (30/06/2018)

Saturday 30th June 2018

Curragh 5.15 (Irish Derby) (Group 1) (1m 4f)

The Irish Derby takes centre stage this Saturday over at the Curragh and it’s Saxon Warrior that heads affairs for Aiden O’Brien as he looks to gain redemption from his odds on flop in the Epsom equivalent.

Saxon Warrior is once again odds on here at a general 4/5 and he’s followed in the betting by a horse who was infront of him in second the last day at Epsom in Dee Ex Bee for Mark Johnston and Silvestre De Sousa, he’s trades at around the 7/2 mark respectively. Godolphin are represented by the bang in form Old Persian for Charlie Appleby and William Buick who comes here on the back of his win in the King Edward at Royal Ascot last week.

All of those horses hold the obvious solid form and it would be no great shock to see any of them win but I’m going to take a chance on one at a big price here and that comes in the form of BANDUA for Dermot Weld.  He comes here off the back of two smart victories the debut by nine lengths. Both of those wins came on soft and heavy going and whilst the ground will be nowhere near that here I still think he could go well at a massive price.

BANDUA – 40/1 E/W

Newcaste 2.05 (Northumberland Plate) (Class 2) (Handicap) (2m)

The Northumberland Plate is the feature up at Newcastle this weekend which is a handicap contest that attracts a very sizeable field. It was won last year by Higher Power who is back again this time around in attempt to retain his crown and is a general 8/1 chance to do so off only a pound higher mark.

The gamble in the race comes on now market leader Withhold who sits at the top off affairs at around 7/2. He landed a similar gamble when last seen when winning the 34 runner Cesarewitch at Newmarket. He could well be better than this kind of company and Roger Charltons mount looks an obvious threat.

The one I like here though comes in the form of NATURAL SCENERY for the boys in blue who had spent his spring contesting hot contests in Meydan. He was second in this last year and with form figures of 1112 on the Tapeta and running off a couple of pounds lower I think he can mount another serious challenge. Paul Hanagan takes the ride for Saeed bin Suroor.
