Saturday Flat Preview. (Haydock, Newmarket, Beverley & Musselburgh) (09/06/2018)

Saturday 9th June 2018

A slightly below par standard of Flat action to get stuck into this Saturday as we find ourselves in between big meetings however still very competitive contests can be found up and down the country.

Haydock will be the feature meeting i’m looking at today with it being John Of Gaunt Day there and i’ll also have a few picks on the level at Newmarket, Musselburgh and Beverley.

2.15: Middle Distance Handicap – (Class 3) (1m 4f)

Sea Youmzain (11/4) (Jockey: S De Sousa – Trainer: M Johnston)

(Won well the last day at Nottingham despite all not going to plan, suspect she will be popped out in front here by the champ and this Sea The Stars filly could well be hard to peg back if coping with a six pound rise.)

2.50: Pinnacle Stakes – (Class 1) (Group 3) (1m 4f)

Cribbs Causeway (5/1) (E/W) (Jockey: K Shoemark – Trainer: R Charlton)

(Progressed into a decent performer last year winning several hot handicaps, ran well in third on reappearance at York the last day in a Group 3 and could well build on that here.)

3.25: Achilles Stakes – (Class 1) (Listed) (5f)

Blue De Vega (16/1) (E/W) (Jockey: O Murphy – Trainer: R Cowell)

(Arguably been a tad unlucky in lesser contests this year despite still finishing in respectable positions. Looks a bit up against it here in this company but could well outrun his odds as he’s a sizeable price if things fall right for him.)

4.00: John Of Gaunt Stakes – (Class 1) (Group 3) (7f)

The John Of Gaunt take centre stage this Saturday afternoon over at Haydock and it’s a Group 3 contest that’s ridden over seven furlongs.

The one I like here is the market leader and that’s of course DUTCH CONNECTION for Charles Hills, James Doyle and the boys in blue Godolphin. I think he’s showed solid ability to compete at a higher level than this on several occasions including a brilliant fourth in the Lockinge the last day. He’s should be bang there here now back down in trip and class, I think he’s a huge player.

The chief threats look to be Emmaus and Tabarrak, Emmaus comes here off the back of another win in a decent contest at Leicester, however the majority of his form comes in more testing conditions. Tabrrak has course and distance form and is up in class today, he could well progress again though and obviously warrants respect for top connections.

Dutch Connection (15/8) (Jockey: J Doyle – Trainer: C Hills)

2.00 – Octave (2/1) (Jockey: R L Moore – Trainer: M Johnston)

(Related to lots of past winners and knuckled down like a typical sort from this yard to win the last day. Likely to come on from that and could prove a tough nut to crack.)

3.05 – Yafta (4/1) (Jockey: D O’Neil – Trainer: R Hannon)

(Ran on strongly the last day to finish second over course and distance and could well build on that here now upped in trip if handling the rise in the weights.)

4.15 – Aim Of Artemis (4/6) (Jockey: R Havlin – Trainer: J H M Gosden)

(Very expensive purchase for Godolphin following win for Sir Michael Stoute last season, lots of fancy entries and should be putting on a bold show here.)

4.50 – Rococo (9/2) (Jockey: L Dettori – Trainer: J H M Gosden)

(Well bred type and has been putting in solid efforts in defeat so far this term, could well improve over this trip and in handicap company, Dettori on board.)

1.55 – Reverend Jacobs (11/10) (Jockey: K Stott – Trainer: W J Haggas)

(Made all in big handicap the last day at the Dante Meeting at York, could well take some stopping here under a penalty.)

3.45 – Knight In Armour (9/4) (Jockey: J Fanning – Trainer: M Johnston)

(Been largely disappointing as a whole but on a very workable mark now and should be going close over this trip.)

3.15 – Wedding Date (11/4) (Jockey: P J Dobbs – Trainer: R Hannon)

(Just edges out No Lippy as my selection as the drawer favours Wedding Date a lot more. Bolted up at the Chester May Festival and ran well in defeat at Sandown in a hot contest the last day, could be thereabouts again here.)

2.10 – Decrypt (2/1) (Jockey: W J Lee – Trainer: P J Twomey)

(Shaped very nicely when second on debut and likely to build on that here and give a very bold showing.)

(Tracker Horse)

NAP: Reverend Jacobs – 1.55 Musselburgh

NB: Octave – 2.00 Newmarket
