Saturday 26th May 2018
A top drawer Saturday of Flat Racing lies ahead this weekend with some cracking cards in both the UK & Ireland. It’s Guineas Weekend at the Curragh which should no doubt throw up some brilliant action and a brilliant card is set to take place for Temple Stakes Day at Haydock.
Here are my views….
Euchen Glen (11/2) (E/W) (Jockey: B McHugh – Trainer: J Goldie)
(Ran a decent race at Chester the last day despite a wide draw, could build on that here and go closer.)
Qaysar (11/2) (E/W) (Jockey: L Dettori – Trainer: R Hannon)
(Looks a really progressive type and won very impressively the last day at Newbury, another bold showing could well be on the cards here for top yard, owners and jockey if handling the step up to a mile.)
3.25: Sandy Lane Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (6f)
Sands Of Mali (7/2) (Jockey: P Hanagan – Trainer: R A Fahey)
(Won the Gimcrack impressively at York last season before flopping in the Middle Park at Newmarket. Returned with a win in a Group 3 at Chantilly on heavy going the last day and could well get involved again in this here.)
4.00: Temple Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (5f)
The Temple Stakes is the feature at Haydock this Saturday and it’s a five furlong Group 2 sprint contest which see’s the return of one of last season’s sprinting stars in Bataash. If he’s anywhere near his best he should take this with the minimal of fuss before going onto bigger and better things this season.
However it’s his first run of the reason and I don’t really want to go ploughing into an odds on shot on their first run so i’m going to try and take him on with HAVANA GREY for Karl Burke who I think is slighty overpriced. He was disapointing on reappearance the last day at Newmarket however I think he can come on that for here and outrun his odds. He was a very smart perfomer last term and I think he has more to offer this time around.
Havana Grey (18/1) (E/W) (Jockey: P J McDonald – Trainer: K R Burke)
Different League (3/1) (Jockey: W M Lordon – Trainer: A P O’Brien)
(Was purchased for a large amount to this all conquering yard this season and hasn’t performed as of yet, however it’s likely that O’Brien will get firing and she could just start that off here.)
Van Beethoven (11/10) (Jockey: R L Moore – Trainer: A P O’Brien)
(Improved from debut third at Newmarket with impressive win the last day, likely a lot more to come and the choice of Ryan Moore here.)
3.35: Greenlands Stakes (Group 2) (6f)
Tasleet (2/1) (Jockey: J Crowley – Trainer: W J Haggas)
(Missed date at York this month due to slight set back but should be ready to go for this, Brando is an obvious live danger but connections think very highly of this one and if he is fully tuned up he should put on a very bold showing.)
4.10: Irish 2000 Guineas (Group 1) (1m)
The Irish 2000 Guineas takes centre stage at the Curragh this Saturday which of course is a Group 1 contest that’s ridden over the distance of a mile.
It’s currently headed by Elarqam for Mark Johnston on the back of his fourth placed effort in the English equivalent over at Newmarket and he’s expected to maintain the form with Gustav Klimt who he re opposes here, these two are trading at around 3/1 and 5/1 respectively.
The one I like here though is U S NAVY FLAG another runner for A P O’Brien. He turned into a very consistent and smart performer last season. He’s kicked off this season with some solid efforts including a fifth placed effort in the French 2000 Guineas the last day. I think he can kick on here though and go a few places better and make his presence felt. Ryan Moore takes the ride and he trades at around the
U S Navy Flag (3/1) (Jockey: R L Moore – Trainer: A P O’Brien)
3.45: Tapster Stakes (Class 1) (Listed)
Mirage Dancer (10/11) (Jockey: P Dobbs – Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute)
(Ran on strongly the last day in a Listed Contest at Ascot just to be denied in second, likely to come on from that here and should be going very close for top yard.)
3.05: Bronte Cup (Class 1) (Group 3)
Precious Ramotswe (7/2) (Jockey: R Havlin – Trainer: J H M Gosden)
(Got back to winning ways the last day after flopping in Listed company the time before that, needs to step up here if to go close again but she could well do that as top trainer does generally do really well these types.)
NAP: Mirage Dancer – 3.45 Goodwood
NB: Qaysar – 2.50 Haydock
