Chester May Festival 2018 –
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3
Friday 11th May 2018
We’ve come to the final day of this year’s May Festival at Chester and i’ve thoroughly enjoyed spending my time here this week as we’ve been treated to some top class racing.
There’s a lot more to come though on Day Three of the Festival and here are my views….
Baraweez – (15/2) (E/W) (Jockey: P Dennis (3) – Trainer: B Ellison)
(Currently on a long losing run that stretches back to 2015, he put in a decent run the last day though at Doncaster and is going off a very workable mark here from the plum draw.)
Above The Rest – (10/1) (E/W) (Jockey: B Curtis – Trainer: T D Barron)
(Poor run the last day but it was on desperate ground, back on a sound surface here and from a decent draw could very well play a part.)
2.25: Huxley Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (1m 2f)
Eminent – (8/11) (Jockey: O Murphy – Trainer: M Meade)
(Very classy sort and very hard to oppose here, ran some mighty races last season in top end contests and if anywhere near in that form will be extremely tough to beat here. War Decree might be next best and put in a good run at a price.)
Dark Red – (6/1) (E/W) (Jockey: R L Moore – Trainer: E A L Dunlop)
(Won this race a couple of years albeit off an eleven pound lower mark, still a decent handicapper and could well get involved here following a decent effort in the Lincoln the last day.)
Pivoine – (13/2) (E/W) (Jockey: O Murphy – Trainer: A M Balding
(Lightly raced sort who was disappointing the last day when down the field on reappearance. Probably needed the run though that day and could well go a lot better here from a decent draw.)
3.35: Chester Cup (Class 2) (2m 2f) (Handicap)
The Chester Cup is one of the feature contests of the whole May Festival, it’s a Class 2 contest that’s ridden over a trip of two miles and two furlongs. This year it’s been moved backed to the Friday where it’s likely to bring in a bumper crowed as it’s a race that’s always proved a popular affair.
It’s a contest that’s always a really tough puzzle to solve as it’s always a fiercely competitive affair. I’ve narrowed it down to two selections here as I imagine many firms will be offering lots of places, the first of these comes in the form of FUN MAC for Hughie Morrison and Oisin Murphy. He ran a belter in this
last year when drawn high and finished a close up third, he’s got a lot kinder draw this time around however and could well play a big role.
The second one I like is MY REWARD for Tim Easterby and David Allan. He’s a horse that loves it around here and likes to make his presence felt from the front, I was here when he won a Listed Handicap back in September last year and if he returns in that kind of form again he could well be involved.
Fun Mac – (14/1) (E/W)
My Reward – (14/1) (E/W)
Kachy – (11/8) (Jockey: R Kingscote – Trainer: T Dascombe)
(Overcame wide draws twice this year over at Lingfield and is two out of two over course and distance here. Another bold bid looks on the cards for yard who have hit the woodwork a bit this week at a track they do very well at.)
Rainbow Rebel (5/1) (E/W) (Jockey: A Breslin (7) – Trainer: M Johnston)
(Won around here before and has been running well on the All Weather lately, drawn well here and could continue recent good form.)
American Gigalo (17/2) (E/W) (Jockey: J F Egan – Trainer: H Fry)
(Proved himself to be a decent performer over staying trips on the All Weather throughout the winter. Couldn’t land a blow the last day in fourth at Musselburgh however that was on heavy ground, better ground could bring out the best in him here.)
NAP: Eminent – 2.25
NB: Kachy – 4.05
