Newmarket Craven Meeting. Day 3. (Thursday)
Thursday 19th April 2018
Craven Meeting Day 3
It’s the final day of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket and that of course means the feature contest the Group 3 Craven Stakes itself. There’s a whole host of other top races to get stuck into also attracting smart performers from all over. Here are my fancies…
1.50 – Music Society (5/2) (Jockey: R L Moore – Trainer: S Kirk)
(Light campaign as a two year old and the pick of that form was when second in between Never Back Down and Corinthia Knight the last day on the All Weather. Likely a lot more to come now and Ryan Moore on board.)
2.25 – Surya (5/1) (E/W) (Jockey: L Dettori – Trainer: J H M Gosden)
(Very impressive pedigree, by Frankel and out of dual Oaks winner there’s every chance this one could be top class. A close eye also needs paying on the Godolphin pair as they’ve had a lot of success in this in the past.)
3.00 – Le Brivido (11/4) (Jockey: P C Boudot – Trainer: A Fabre)
(Lighty raced sort who was last seen when winning the Jersey at Royal Ascot last season. Needs to be near best if he’s going to get involved here but there’s every chance he could well have a big season this year for master trainer.)
3.35 – Craven Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3) (1m)
The Craven Stakes takes centre stage at HQ this afternoon on Day Three of the Craven Meeting which is a Group 3 contest ridden over a mile.
There’s a hot favourite at the head of affairs an that comes in the form of Roaring Lion for John Gosden. I was at Doncaster the last day when he lost his unbeaten run to Saxon Warrior but ran a blinding race in second. There’s likely a lot more to come from him this term and this looks somewhat of a stepping stone for him.
The rest are all fairly close to one another in the betting if you’re looking for something to take the jolly on with. Glorious Journey looks to be best of the rest and could well run another big race in attempt to keep his unbeaten record in tact.
He’s no price unfortunately but I can’t see ROARING LION getting beat here. I’m really struggling to finding anything to convincingly take him on with as there is only seven runners which leaves the each way element a bit difficult.
ROARING LION – 4/7 –
4.10 – Shieka Reika (13/8) (Jockey: A Atzeni – Trainer: R Varian)
(Runner up on all three starts so far and bumped in to a decent one the last time. Expensive sort and should well go close again here now dropped in trip.)
4.45 – Argentello (7/4) (Jockey: L Dettori – Trainer: J H M Gosden)
(Good run on debut at Doncaster the last day when second as many of Gosden’s do could well come on again from that run in receipt of weight here.)
5.20 – African Jazz (11/4) (Jockey: W Buick – Trainer: C Appleby)
(Cheekpieces added since win when last season but could well go close again here for powerful connections. Half brother to the smart Usherette and also gelded.)
5.55 – Maksab (14/1) (E/W) (Jockey: S De Sousa – Trainer: M R Channon)
(A few moderate runs of late but is a decent performer on his day. Could well feature here at a price, SDS on board.)
NAP: Le Brivido – 3.00
NB: African Jazz – 5.20
