Melbourne Cup Preview 2017

Melbourne Cup – Flemington – (2m)

‘The race that stops a nation’…. I think that’s what it’s called anyway. The Melbourne Cup! Kicks off in the early hours and to be fair it is on hell of a carnival as you’ll see for yourself if you stay up to watch it.

The race last year was won by Almandin who just edged out Irish raider Heartbreak City in a cracking finish. Almandin subsequently finds himself at the top of the market to retain his crown here and he has required the services of Frankie Dettori on board to do just that.

I’m not a religious follower of Australian racing so I aren’t all that sure about the credentials that some of these may or may not have but I try to keep up to date with all the big contests and have a few friends over there who attend big meetings throughout the year. Some firms are paying as much as six places here which is pretty barmy but i’m not one to complain. I’ll stick to just the two selections personally though, one is a fairly strong one and the other will probably be seen on the borderline of lunacy in the opinions of some.

The first one I like here though is the horse that I tipped for this in 2015 in MAX DYNAMITE for Willie Mullins and the Ricci’s. He was second in this that day in 2015 after running on strongly under Frankie Dettori just to be edged out by big outsider Prince Of Penzance. He’s got a handy draw this time around and comes in to this contest a lot fresher than a lot of these as he’s remarkably only had the five runs since he was last here. He’s ran well in a host of big field handicaps throughout his career and is currently trading at a general 16/1 which is a very attractive price in my opinion.

The other one I like here is BONDI BEACH the former once smart AP O’Brien horse that was involved in that infamous St Leger finish with Simple Verse back in 2015. He was well beaten in this a couple of years ago and hasn’t really shown a whole lot since then however he’s in blinkers this time and was once as said a previously smart horse. He’s also got experience over track and trip. He can be found trading at a monstrous price of around 80/1.
