Racing Post Trophy Preview (28/10/2017)

Doncaster Racing Post Trophy Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) (1m)

The final Group 1 of the Flat Season of course is the Racing Post Trophy at my beloved Doncaster and it’s attracted a really competitive and impressive field with some big Irish raiders making the trip over.

Aiden O’Brien comes here in hope to break Bobby Frankel’s Group 1 record and has sent two of his up and coming big guns in an attempt to do just that. These come in the form of Saxon Warrior & The Pentagon. Both have been winning impressively over in Ireland in decent contests which has earned them both places at the top of next year’s Derby market. Obviously it goes without saying they both have big chances.

I am going to try and take them on though with a coupe of alternatives, the first of these comes in the form of fellow Irish raider VERBAL DEXTERITY for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning. He’s won two of his three starts for Jim and is thought very highly of. He is one of the horses that I think will reach big heights next season and I think he can continue his progression by making a bold bid to get in the frame here. He’s a best priced of around 7/2.

One i’d be willing to take a chance on as an each way alternative is CHILEAN for Martyn Meade & Andrea Atzeni. He was last season when winning a Listed contest at Haydock and has been progressing really nicely. Atzeni has won this race the last four years in a row and I think this one has a real chance of making the frame. If we do get any rain it’ll certainly help his cause, he’s a best priced of around 14/1.

VERBAL DEXTERITY – 7/2 – (Jockey: Kevin Manning – Trainer: Jim Bolger)

CHILEAN – 14/1 (E/W) (Jockey: Andrea Atzeni – Trainer: Martyn Meade)
