Newbury Mill Reef Stakes Preview. (23/09/2017)

Mill Reef Stakes 6f (Group 2)

Following the disappointing news of Ayr’s Gold Cup meeting cancellation due to a waterlogged surface the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury seems to take centre stage of the action and it’s certainly thrown up a competitive renewal.

Invincible Army heads affairs for James Tate and Martin Harley on the back of his victory in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes on the All Weather at Kempton last time out, before a string of decent placed efforts in Group company before that. He’s a real consistent sort around this level and certainly justifies his place at the head of the market.

I’ve got a pretty strong fancy in this contest though and that comes in the style of James Garfield for trainer George Scott. I tipped this horse up for the Acomb Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival where he was just edged out in the closing stages by the unbeaten Wells Farhh Go. He drops back down to 6 furlongs here however, which may just be perfect for him on ground he’ll much prefer. He’s certainly got a lot of progression ahead of him and I think he can make another step forward here and make a bold bid to get into the frame. He can be found trading at a best priced of 9/2 and Frankie Dettori takes the ride.

Nebo might be one to look out for at a bigger price, he was albeit disappointing last time out in the Gimcrack at York however he returns back to the scene of his maiden victory here and can’t be ruled out on the back of his other efforts in Group company this year. Ryan Moore takes the ride for Charles Hills.

Selections: James Garfield 9/2 E/W – Nebo 8/1 E/W
