3.35 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes 5f (Group 1)
The Nunthorpe is the feature contest on Day Three of the festival and it has one of the duels of the season when two star sprinters take on each other in Lady Aurelia & Battaash. It certainly divides opinion, even between the people i’ll be attending the meeting with which will probably lead to some heated debates and a choice few words thrown at each other until the off.
Battaash’s advantage comes in the form of that he has experience on different tracks in the country having won at both Sandown and Goodwood in taking style each time, he’s also done his winning on surfaces from Good to Firm & Soft so he is as versatile as he is impressive. He beat a lot of today’s field at Goodwood last time out in the Group 2 Qatar King George stakes and another big run looks inevitable.
I absolutely love this Wesley Ward superstar though in Lady Aurelia. A lot of people wrote her off at Ascot following her defeat at Newmarket but she came back in tremendous style to win the King’s Stand when also beating a lot of today’s opponents in the process. She also won on soft ground at Ascot first time around so the ground shouldn’t be a problem either. Frankie is back on board today and I can’t not side with her on the back of her Royal Ascot romp. I can’t wait to see her in action and i’m confident she’s got another huge run in that massive American engine of hers.
If you don’t want to side with either of the market leaders at their short prices a couple of each way alternatives I quite like here are Washington DC and Goldream. Washington DC has been performing adequately in top sprinting contests this year and got a Group 3 to his name last time out which will do his confidence a world of good. He’s currently trading at a general 16/1 and Ryan Moore takes the ride. Goldream has been a fine servant to the game, the eight year old sprinter has put in some big performances in his time and he might just have another big run left in him. He’s shown glimpses of spark this season and at 66/1 he might be worth a small wager on him sneaking into the frame, Martin Harley is on board.
Selections: Lady Aurelia 6/4 – Washington DC 16/1 E/W – Goldream 66/1 E/W
