1.50 Coral Charge 5f (Group 3)
I’ll start off Eclipse Day with the Coral Charge a Group 3 sprint contest over five furlongs which is headed by Battash for Charlie Hills at a general 11/4, he won over track and trip in a Listed contest on his reappearance and looks to give another big showing here. However champion jockey Jim Crowley chooses Muthmir over him. He finished ahead of a lot of these in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot when fourth behind Lady Aurelia and can be found at 13/2 for this which I think might prove to be a cracking each way price. Tis Marvellous may be another each way selection to consider for Clive Cox.
Selections: Muthmir 13/2 E/W – Tis Marvellous 7/1 E/W
2.25 Coral Challenge 1m (Class 2)
This year’s Coral Challenge looks a really tough puzzle to solve a fiercely competitive renewal of which you could make a case for the majority of the involved. It’s headed by Greenside for Henry Candy and Martin Harley. He looks to be a very progressive handicapper winning over course and distance last time out before an impressive second here before that. He does lose Ryan Moore’s services today to El Hayem but he looks sure to give a big run again. Another one I like here as an each way shout is George William for Richard Hannon and Sean Levey. He won his reappearance run before two impressive efforts in Spring Cup and Victoria Cup. The Royal Ascot run could best be ignored due to being on the wrong side of the track. If bouncing back to his earlier form he’s certainly a live contender.
Selections: Greenside 9/2 E/W – George William 7/1 E/W
3.00 Coral Distaff 1m (Class 1 Listed)
The Distaff this year is headed by Paco’s Angel on the back of a third placed finish in a Listed Handicap at Royal Ascot, he’s been progressing nicely for the former champion jockey and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that progression continued here. He trades at a general 11/4 and Shane Kelly is on board. There’s a couple that I like here as each way alternatives to the market leader, firstly Tisbutadream for David Elsworth and the in form Silvestre De Sousa. This won a Group 3 over course and distance here last year and although he was only 9th at Royal Ascot in the Sandringham Handicap this year he was drawn poorly and raced wide. A return to last year’s form would see him make a bold bid to get into the frame. The other one I like here is Standing Rock for John Gosden and Ryan Moore. He’s only had one solitary start but did win that, John could of found him a much easier affair than this to progress in so it gives the impression that connections are confident that he’ll cope with the step up in class and put in a big run.
Selections: Standing Rock 13/2 E/W – Tisbutadream 7/1 E/W
3.35 Coral Eclipse 1m 2f (Group 1)
This year’s Coral Eclipse takes place on Saturday afternoon and it looks be a cracking renewal headed by Cliffs of Moher for AP O’Brien. He justifies favourtism on the back of his second place run in the Derby at Epsom behind stablemate Wings Of Eagles. He’s trading at around 7/4 for this and connections feel that this step down back in trip will be key for him, he’s sure to give a bold showing if on form. One that I think will give the market leader a lot to think about is this year’s St James Palace winner Barney Roy for Richard Hannon and Godolphin. He won in style that day when lowering the colours of Churchill at Royal Ascot. He’s up in trip here today but he gives the impression that he’ll have no problems staying this further distance and if he does just that he’s going to be very hard to peg back. He’s trading at a general 3/1 and James Doyle is on board again. Eminent is said to be powering up and down the gallops at home and was close up behind Cliffs Of Moher in the Derby at Epsom when fourth which brings him into serious consideration. He gives the impression that there is a lot of more to come from him yet and he now has massively in form jockey Silvestre De Sousa now on board taking over from Jim Crowley. One of my personal favourites Decorated Knight has been progressing fantastically over the past year and continued that progression when a brilliant second behind Highland Reel at Royal Ascot in the Prince of Wales. He’ll relish a fast surface and might just out run is his odds of 15/2 again.
Selections: Barney Roy 11/4 – Decorated Knight 8/1 E/W
