I’ve been asked a few times if im doing a post on this, and with me being the cracking guy that I am, here we are. The Melbourne Cup is the biggest race in Australia, and if im not mistaken the majority of Melbourne get the day off for it. Alright isn’t it that. It’s a 2 mile flat race and attracts decent horses from all across the globe. Last year’s race was won by 100/1 shot Prince of Penzance beating the horse I’d backed the Willie Mullins raider Max Dynamite (11/2) into second. This probably stressed me out than any race in a good while and I still haven’t fully got over it. This year’s race is probably even more open than last years with the favourite Hartnell trading at around 9/2 with most firms. The Godolphin charge will be saddled by impressive Australian jockey James McDonald. Hartnell was firmly put in his place by superstar Winx last time out but won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington not long a go and has obvious chances to be in the frame. The horse that Hartnell beat into second that day in Flemington is my fancy for this year’s Melbourne Cup and that’s Jameka, currently trading at around 7/1 as the second favourite. The Caufield Cup winner showed a nice turn of foot to beat Godolphin’s Scottish by 3 lengths and I think the mare comes into this in strong form with 7/1 being a great price (Thats until some 150/1 shot comes thundering down the straight). There are several European raiders that I quite like the look of. Some recognisable names include AP O’Briens’ Bondi Beach, Michael Bells’ Big Orange who has had an impressive campaign, Willie Mullins’ Wicklow Brave who lowered the colours of Arc 3rd Order of St George at the Curragh not long ago. Tony Martin’s Heartbreak City, and Charlie Appleby’s Qewy. I think Qewy is a very interesting one, he stays on superbly as we saw at Goodwood and Ascot with James McDonald on board and could be one to look out for in the closing stages, he’ll probably be a nice price too. All that being said this is an extremely open race and as we saw last year can really go to anyone. Best of luck..
